Having the opportunity to work with someone who constantly puts others first, truly cares about their team’s success, has goals of their own, and is determined to achieve them, regardless of the circumstances, is second to none. There is a huge difference in a manager/boss and a leader, and at UMC Direct, we choose to LEAD. Above all else, leadership is the core of our business, and we are extremely thankful to work with a team that leads from the front at all times!
We’d like to introduce to you, Corey Odom – Manager here at UMC Direct in Cary, NC! Corey has a no-excuse mentality and will do whatever it takes to help his team succeed. We could brag about him all day, but want to give the world a chance to get to know him in his own words. So we sat down with him for a chance to hear his secrets to success!
First things first, Corey, where are you from?
I was born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Dallas. Go, Cowboys!
You’ve credited your family as having a strong influence in your life, how many siblings do you have?
I have one older brother, one younger brother, and one younger sister. Without having them to grow up with, I don’t think my childhood would have been as great as it was!
Having four successful kids is no easy task. What do your parents do for a living?
Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, which weighed heavily on my desire to work for myself and help other people along the way. My dad purchased a Waffle House franchise in Texas, while my mom started a Mother’s Day Out Program / Non-Profit Pre-School at our church. She is a SAINT!
We know entrepreneurship was always at the forefront of your mind from a young age – but we are curious what you did for fun. Any hobbies?
I love sports and I love video games! All of them. Football, Basketball, and Baseball kept me active and my gaming systems (Atari, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, XBOX, Playstation – literally had them all) kept my mind busy when I was indoors.
As a sports and gaming fanatic, I’m sure you’ve had some major influences in the entertainment industry as well.
For sure. Mike is the man – Jackson, Phelps, Jordan, Farris. At one point, I was convinced the name Michael led to crazy success!
With successful parents and celebrity role models like that, you’re destined to have an amazing work ethic early on. What did you do following high school?
You’re absolutely right on with that. However, my desire to work hard took a short break following high school. I actually spent a lot of time socializing…..not working. Thankfully, my independence and will to succeed took back over and led me to college, where again I was involved in sports and social clubs. I was a Biology Major and Biochemistry minor, so I joined the Pre-Pharm and Biochemistry societies and played Intramural Basketball and Softball along with Club Tennis.
Wow. An impressive turn of events! So how did you start in sales & marketing?
Well, I like to think that it actually found me. And was exactly what I needed. It challenged me, shaped me, and kept me focused.
What do you love most about working at UMC Direct?
I love knowing that I am in control of my results. I control my success, not the other way around.
Our industry is famous for developing successful entrepreneurs, but also for giving out some pretty cool bonuses. Any big wins for you, Corey?
Oh for sure. Our first year in business, we had over $750,000 in revenue and we also won our client’s Campaign Cup in 2016. I’m extremely proud of the team for those two things. It’s HUGE!
Congratulations! What should we be expecting from Corey Odom in the next few years?
My goal by 2020 is to help our client expand into 5 new markets, so my overall focus is organizational growth!
Growth is key in our business. There’s a saying that “Leaders are Readers”. What books do you always recommend?
Without a doubt, Unstoppable by Dave Anderson and Relentless by Tim Grover (sports again!). There’s so much to be learned by those guys!
Great reads! Now, something we all are excited to hear. Life motto?
Success doesn’t care about your feelings.
Before we let you go, do you have any words of advice for us?
I recommend doing something out of your comfort zone at least once a week. It stimulates growth, stretches character and heightens your senses!
Corey – UMC Direct is lucky to have a mentor like you! Your love of sports and people keeps you relatable to everyone, which makes you an incredible person to have as a leader. Keep up the amazing work and we look forward to watching our organization grow with your leadership!
